A photograph of Rubén Herrera from behind. He is a tall man walking with dignity and a cane towards a crowd of people. On the right are people holding signs wearing traditional Mayan clothing, on the left a line of police in uniform.

Beloved community, we write this Solidarity Update with broken hearts. Rubén Herrera of the Departmental Assembly of Peoples of Huehuetenango (ADH) passed away on July 22.  We honor Rubén and we stand in solidarity with Rubén’s family and the ADH.

We also invite you to watch the new video from our campaign to defund the Asylum Cooperative Agreements (ACAs): recently we delivered a petition against the ACAs to 300+ Congressional offices. As a matter of fact, this campaign was sparked by Rubén and others calling out this injustice and urging NISGUA to join the fight. We carry that fight forward.

Finally, we invite you to read about the ongoing offensive to the Guatemalan Judicial system, we are alarmed by this situation, and we share with you the concerns of national and international human rights organizations who have named this a technical coup that puts Guatemalan institutions at risk.
