“Mayor Feliciana Herrera filed a Provisional Amparo, a document that Judge Jacinto Humberto Cedillo Chel of the Peace Court based in Nebaj granted in favor of the ancestral authorities. “This Thursday morning, Municipal Transit Police (PMT) workers and the judge of Municipal Affairs attempted to evict the Ixil authorities from the space occupied by the Indigenous Mayor’s Office within the municipality of Nebaj. The indigenous authorities do not know where their equipment, furniture and other materials were moved to. They also denounce the holding of four of their members. In the afternoon, the Court of First Criminal Instance of Nebaj granted a provisional injunction and ordered the municipal mayor Geronimo Bernal to suspend the eviction.”
