| The rains have finally arrived in Guatemala, softening the earth that holds so many stories: of loss, of resistance, of return. In the Maya cosmovision, time is not a line but a spiral: what was planted long ago comes back, transformed. This season, we’ve witnessed that return. Remains laid to rest, communities reaffirming their sovereignty, truth spoken aloud in a courtroom. The rains nourish; the people endure. Here’s what your solidarity helped make possible these past months.
🕯️After more than four decades, the remains of 72 victims of the Internal Armed Conflict were laid to rest in a mausoleum in Pacoj, Chimaltenango. On the very same day, judges in the Ixil Genocide Case granted house arrest to Benedicto Lucas García, a decision the AJR firmly denounced. ✊🏽 The ADH celebrated 20 years of Maya Mam resistance in Huehuetenango, where 30 of the department’s 33 municipalities have said no to extractive projects through community consultation. Internacionalistas with NISGUA joined the anniversary ceremony. ⚖️ Forty-four years later, after four months of hearings, a tribunal sentenced ex-police commander Juan Francisco Cifuentes Cano to 50 years in prison for the forced disappearance of Luz Leticia Hernández Agustín and Ana María López Rodríguez, an unprecedented step toward justice.
