July holds special meaning in Guatemala, marked by “El Día Fuera del Tiempo” (The Day Beyond Time), on the 25th—a sacred close to the Maya Calendar’s 13 moons and 364 days, inviting reflection, remembrance, and renewal. This month, communities honor the disappeared, celebrate resilience against state terror, and amplify youth-led struggles for environmental justice and self-determination. From defending land and water to commemorating historic resistance, these acts of memory remind us that healing and change grow from the roots of the past.
🕯️ As part of Memory Days 2025, Guatemala honors on June 21st National Day Against Forced Disappearance the 45,000+ victims of forced disappearance during the Internal Armed Conflict, especially the 27 unionists disappeared in 1980. Through art and memory, pain becomes hope and resistance. On June 30th, the Day of Heroes and Martyrs is reclaimed to demand justice and truth against state terror. These acts remind us that remembering is the key to justice and lasting change.
🌿 This month, the Xinka youth have launched a campaign urging Guatemala to ratify the Escazú Agreement, a vital treaty protecting environmental rights and defenders. Despite signing in 2018, Guatemala hasn’t ratified it yet. Mobilizing nationwide, these young Indigenous leaders stand against extractive industries and violence toward land defenders.
✊ On July 25th, the Peoples’ Assembly of Huehuetenango (ADH) marked 19 years of defending their land and water against mining and hydro projects. Their work includes empowering youth to participate in decisions shaping their communities. A heartfelt tribute honored founder Rubén Herrera’s lasting impact. Read ADH’s anniversary statement here.
📖 The Ixil people have been supported by NISGUA for over 20 years, including during the historic 2013 genocide trial. In May, they commemorated the 12th anniversary of the conviction, and in June, they celebrated Ixil Dignity Day honoring a 1936 uprising against forced labor. Accompanier Nick’s latest Accompanier Perspectives connects past and present struggles faced by the Ixil people.
As we move forward beyond “El Día Fuera del Tiempo,” let us carry the strength of these stories and struggles in our hearts—honoring the past, empowering the present, and shaping a future where justice, dignity, and respect for life flourish in every corner of Guatemala.
Thank you for your ongoing commitment to NISGUA and the courageous communities we stand with!
