For years the Departmental Assembly of the People of Huehuetenango (ADH) has remained strong in the defense of the territory from different strategies, last June 21, 2023, the 4th Municipal Water Protection Agreement was signed, in which the alienable and imprescriptible character of the water resources of the municipality of Aguacatán, department of Huehuetenango was affirmed/agreed upon.

Message from Member of the Departmental Assembly of the Peoples of Huehuetenango
Friends,
People in general
At national and international level
The Board of Directors of ADH shares with great joy and enthusiasm some beautiful news. Yesterday we went to receive the Municipal Agreement for the Protection of Mother Water, in the office of the municipal mayor of the Municipality of Aguacatán.
It is the result of a long struggle that we have been promoting with the native peoples of the Municipality. This struggle is not a flat road, it is always uphill and downhill. We had to use the right strategy to be able to harvest today.
Even though the majority of the Board are unemployed, we fight through clear conscience, without salaries, we are volunteers driving the struggle.
It was worth it, we had to raise awareness from community to community, raising community agreements, to capture the community petition to ask for a Municipal Agreement, but mainly the community self-determination to protect our Mother Water.
Finally, the people of Aguacatán entered into their first moment of celebration, celebrating their first Municipal Agreement. This is the way in which ADH protects its cosmos, using municipal authorities, incorporating articles of national and international laws, to put a padlock on the protection. We consider that our struggle is a clear example for more people in Guatemala and internationally to join strong actions to protect Mother Earth and Mother Water.
ADH has carried out 30 Good Faith Community Consultations in 30 municipalities, 4 Municipal Water Protection Agreements in 4 municipalities as strategic tools to protect Mother Earth and Mother Water.
Long live ADH!
Long live the people of Huehuetenango in struggle!
