Right now the most well documented genocide in recorded history is being committed by Israel–with the full throated military and political complicity of the United States–against the Palestinian people in Gaza. On Friday, March 8th (International Women’s Day) the biggest public display of solidarity with Palestine I’ve witnessed here in Guatemala took place. It took place in the framework of global feminist solidarity, with slogans like, “La lucha de las mujeres palestinas es la lucha de todas las mujeres oprimidas.” / “The struggle of the Palestinian women is the struggle of all oppressed women.”

As people around the world continue showing out to stop this genocide right now and pressuring against US and Western nations support of Israel, victims and survivors of genocide in Guatemala are preparing to take Benedicto Lucas García, head of the Guatemalan army between 1978 and 1982, to court.

The US and Israel, as you may have guessed, were material backers –weapons, counterinsurgency strategy, $$– of the genocide against the Maya Ixil people. Just during the time that Lucas García was head of the Guatemalan army, 1978 – 1982, more than 1,700 people were victims of the crimes of genocide, forced disappearance and crimes against humanity by the military operations deployed in the Ixil region. People do not forget genocide, and do not give up the struggle for justice. The Association for Justice and Reconciliation (AJR), an association of victims, survivors, and family members has been organizing across several regions of Guatemala for decades, having brought several cases against those responsible for the genocide in Guatemala and worked tirelessly to retain the historical memory of the genocide for future generations. Now Lucas García will face trial for these crimes against the Maya Ixil people, with oral and public debate starting on March 25th. There are ways people living in the US can act in solidarity with the survivors.
