Project Description

Ask Pan American Silver: Why did you buy the Escobal mine?

~Para leer en español~

Our comrades at EARTHWORKS have organized an action page that asks Pan American Silver why they bought the Escobal silver mine in Guatemala.

No community consent.

Militarization and violence against peaceful resistance.

A mine suspended because of community opposition and a court ruling that Indigenous Xinka rights had been violated.

This is the mess Pan American Silver bought in early 2019 when it acquired the Escobal silver mine in Guatemala from Tahoe Resources.

Pan American Silver says it wants a positive relationship with the local communities where it operates. So why buy a mine that Guatemalans don’t want? Why buy a mine with a legacy of violent repression? Why buy a mine that violates Indigenous rights?

That is what Xinka people want to know.
