April in Guatemala arrives as a moment of transition — as the first rains approach, many Maya calendars signal a time of balance, preparation, and renewal. It is also a time to remember that the past is not behind us: the legacies of the Internal Armed Conflict remain present in the lives of communities, in ongoing struggles for truth and justice, and in the everyday acts of resistance and care that sustain them.

In this spirit of memory and continuity, this month’s Solidarity Update brings together stories of truth-telling, cultural resistance, and collective action — reflecting the ongoing work of communities to reclaim dignity, defend their identity and territory, and sustain long struggles for justice.

🕯️ In Chimaltenango, Maya Kaqchikel families received the remains of loved ones who were forcibly disappeared over 40 years ago — a powerful testament to their dignity and persistence in the face of decades of impunity. Through the long process of exhumation and identification, memory is restored and the disappeared can finally be laid to rest.

🌿 Despite years of erasure and denial, Xinka communities continue to assert their existence and defend their territory. Alboroto Magazine: Chronicles of the Mountain brings together stories that show how culture, memory, and everyday practices — from cooking to coffee — become powerful forms of resistance and survival.
